Adventures in Baby Food Making: Chapter 2

Published by Court at 7:45 am under How-To, Recipe, Simply Live

Last week, my friend shared how she came to try making her own baby food. Read on for more. I love how this experience brings back those memories of childhood and family.

It’s a rockin’ Friday night. My husband is out on the town. So, with nothing else to do after my little man goes down, I get out my baby food making system and digress to singing: “let’s start at the beginning…a very good place to start” (Julie Andrews-style…she’s my new role model - the precocious nun-cum-Governess who makes a difference in the lives of a bunch of kids).

I see the first recipes under “Single Ingredient Vegetable Purees” – you know, carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, etc.

The authors recommend using the Baby Steps Food Mill for sweet potatoes because the food processor can make the results too starchy. (Now this baby food mill thing is kind of like your great grandmother’s “mixer” – you know, hand-cranked…I’m already getting nervous…)

I decide to channel my mom who passed away ten years ago. I get out the stainless mixing bowls I inherited. I love them. I sit peeling sweet potatoes, much like I did as a kid. It brings back warm memories – sitting on the porch, peeling potatoes for French fries. Aaaahhh…

My confidence returns…I get excited when I see the sweet potatoes are a healthy shade of orange inside. I continue on with my newfound confidence.

I read the second direction in the book: Chop two medium sized sweet potatoes into small pieces – I continue with the ghost of mom and use her paring knife. It’s funny about the paring knife – I remember being scared that she would cut her thumb open – I mean, she had the blade facing the pad of her THUMB! It was amazing how she never did cut her thumb off and I see now that I won’t either.

I’m off to a great start. And so goes my “rockin’ Friday night”

To be continued…
