A friend passed along this great post from holy experience chock-full of links to help prepare for Christmas. This one, in particular, is right up my alley as hubby and I make plans to spend our first Christmas in our own home, and also are in the the final weeks of our first pregnancy. Simplifying is key.

Came across this etsy shop, Water4Christmas, through the blog of a college friend of my hubby’s…

In this week of Thanksgiving, and this upcoming season of giving, I thought it appropriate to spread the word and give you some potential Christmas gift ideas. Most of us have more than we need. We take clean water for granted in a serious way in the U.S. Perhaps consider a gift that gives to those less fortunate. All proceeds from items sold on this shop go directly to building fresh water wells in Liberia, West Africa. Very cool.

Happy Thanksgiving! I love this holiday and that is all about giving thanks and being with family. Despite the stresses of traveling out of state, eating too much, reflecting on the ups and downs throughout the past year, having this day to intentionally remember what is most important is a gift.

I am thankful for…
- faith, hope, love…
- my husband…
- baby on the way, and a healthy pregnancy thus far…
- dear family across the country (between siblings, parents, and grandparents, we cover six states!)…
- encouraging friends…
- the beauty of nature…
- careers that provide and are intellectually demanding…
- our home…
- the blogging community that inspires me to think and do creatively…
There is so much.

This Little Project shared a recipe for a “Blessing Mix” for Thanksgiving guests to munch on…another way to help us remember all we have to be thankful for. This would also make a great hostess gift or favors for your Turkey Day guests.
Bugles: Cornucopia or Horn of Plenty: a symbol of our abundance
Candy Corn: Sacrifices of the Pilgrims’ first winter. Food was so scarce that the settlers survived on just a few kernels of corn a day.
Pretzels: Arms folded in prayer, a freedom sought by those who founded our country.
Sunflower seeds: Promise of a future harvest, one we will reap only if seeds are planted and tended with diligence.
Cranberries: Harvest gifts of our bountiful land.
M&M’s: Memories of those who came before us to guide us to a blessed future.

The morning after Thanksgiving, we’re usually still stuffed from the previous day’s Turkey dinner. Family Fun Magazine suggests this lighter fare to gobble up on Friday morning…very cute!

Last year my cousin had everyone at her house for Thanksgiving. At each place setting were leaves cut from construction paper in various autumn colors. Each guest wrote what they were thankful for on the leaf and attached them to a paper tree by the front door, very similar to the one pictured below. The tree is still there as a reminder of how much the family has to be thankful for.

I love this idea and you still have a couple of days to pull together a few simple supplies (probably which you already have on hand) to prepare this type of activity for your family. Use grocery bags turned inside out to make your tree trunk and branches. You can even use recycled paper to cut our your leaves, so long as the background is a light enough color to write on. Place a marker at each place setting and your set. You could even use these leaves as placecards with each guests name at the top of the leaf.
I also like this different version of a gratitude tree…

Today begins Use Less Stuff Week…perfect timing to gain awareness before the holiday waste starts to pile up.
One cool excerpt to help with your holiday planning:
“When it’s time to apply the tape, you’ll be happy to learn that through a partnership with Ter- racycle called The Tape Brigade, Scotch Tape wants you and your favorite organization to collect and send them used dispensers and cores for recycling. Scotch Tape will then donate two cents per dispenser to a charity of your choice. You can get a pre-paid postage label and learn more at www.terracycle.net.”
